Fresco is an ancient method of painting on to wet plaster requiring the artist to make a direct and immediate transmission of ideas and concepts. The magic of fresco is in the use of natural pigments which become pure, bright and luminous as they are fixed permanently into the surface – the painting becomes stone.

Egg tempera is a simple and direct medium that can create luminous surfaces richer in colour in colour and transparency than almost any other medium. The excellent condition of the paintings from the fourteenth century demonstrates the durability of this medium.

New course starting in 2017. The Romans painted frescoes using a technique called 'stucco lucido' -layers of marble dust plaster which were polished and shined, reworked and waxed; an interesting technique that has many possibilities for contemporary painters. Full details coming soon!
